In Scottsdale, the Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival (GPJFF) is an independent, volunteer-run 501(c)(3) organization. They celebrate Jewish culture through the art of film. The festival is funded through ticket sales, donations, advertising, and grants, with past support from notable entities like the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Each year, the GPJFF presents a diverse array of films from around the world, showcasing genres such as drama, comedy, documentaries, and Holocaust narratives. This variety ensures that all attendees find something that resonates with their personal tastes and interests, while also exploring new perspectives and stories.
The selection process for the festival is meticulous and starts immediately after the current event concludes. Film screening committees work diligently to choose films that not only entertain but also educate and enlighten the audience about Jewish history, life, and culture.
In 2020, nearly 13,000 people attended the festival, reflecting its continuous growth and the increasing interest in Jewish-themed films in the region. The festival not only attracts locals but also many visitors who spend their winters in the Valley, who regularly attend and actively support the event.
Besides the annual festival, the GPJFF holds special screenings throughout the year, often collaborating with other local groups. These events provide additional opportunities for the community to engage with Jewish cinema outside of the regular festival schedule.
The Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival continues to be a significant cultural event in Scottsdale, drawing more attendees each year and enriching the community’s cultural landscape. Whether you are a film enthusiast or someone interested in Jewish culture, the GPJFF offers a welcoming and engaging environment to explore the rich tapestry of Jewish storytelling through cinema.
