Celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The Skatalites at the Musical Instrument Museum

Join us in celebrating the 60th anniversary of The Skatalites. This band defined Jamaica’s sound and became an iconic symbol of the island’s musical heritage. The concert will occur at the Musical Instrument Museum, where ska’s rich history and pulse will come to life.

Forming in 1964, The Skatalites are frequently hailed as the originators of ska music. They blend elements of calypso, Caribbean mento, R&B, and rock into a distinctive sound, influencing genres from reggae to pop. The group’s original members were prolific musicians. You can hear them on hundreds of recordings with legendary vocalists such as Marley, Hibbert, Cliff, and more.

After a brief split in 1965, the members pursued various musical paths. The genre evolved from ska to rocksteady and reggae. The Skatalites’ reunion in 1983 for Reggae Sunsplash in Montego Bay marked the beginning of their resurgence. They supported Bunny Wailer on the Liberation Tour in 1989 and embarked on their first headlining tour of the United States in 1990.

Today, The Skatalites continue to leave a profound impact on the world of music. We celebrate them for their pioneering contributions and enduring presence in Jamaican popular music. Their 60th-anniversary celebration at the Musical Instrument Museum promises to be a memorable event, showcasing the band’s extraordinary journey and lasting legacy.

Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the legendary Skatalites perform live as they bring the history, energy, and soul of ska music to an unforgettable evening of celebration. Join us to honor a band that has shaped the musical landscape for six decades and continues to inspire musicians and fans worldwide.
