Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique, an epic work for large orchestral forces, tells the tale of an artist, suffering from unrequited love, who imagines he takes opium and goes on a fantastic, hallucinatory trip. Mexican-American conductor Robert Treviño leads the orchestra in this audience favorite, and in Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz’ Téenek, named for the indigenous Huastec people. Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin joins the orchestra for Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, a work influenced by Basque folk music and American jazz that begins with the crack of a whip and ends with a rush to the finish line.
