If his saxophone playing was often confrontational, staccato, his flute-playing is more introspective and fluid, a musical practice not dissimilar to a mindfulness of breathing exercise.

Multi-instrumentalist Shabaka (formerly known as Shabaka Hutchings) helped put England’s 21st-century jazz scene on the map as the leader of several influential groups, including Sons of Kemet and the Comet Is Coming. His work transcends conventional notions of genre and draws from a vast palette of cultural influences. He is a pioneering voice in British jazz, but he has also performed classical concertos with world-leading orchestras.
Shabaka’s critically acclaimed 2022 EP, Afrikan Culture, is a work of exceptional beauty and urgency that saw him shift instruments from the saxophone to flutes—including the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute. His newest album, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace, is similarly focused on flutes (and the clarinet), and it is chock-full of warm, personal, and reflective compositions that fuse jazz and new age music. It is a stunning reintroduction to a prolific artist who represents the spirit of exploration.
