Not Quite Dead White Man Music

Start Date
October 17 @ 7:30 pm
End Date
October 17 @ 9:30 pm

MusicaNova Orchestra | 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2025
Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix
The traditional classical music canon is dominated by white men of the past, which inspired African American composer Evan Williams to create the harpsichord concerto Dead White Man Music. It blends J.S. Bach with Nina Simone and Julius Eastman, Renaissance ballads with rock. ASU’s Tigran Buniatyan is the soloist. The program also includes music by two living women: In Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes, Valerie Coleman pays tribute to Native Americans and former African slaves who endured the Trail of Tears, while Cuban-born Pulitzer Prize winner Tania León weaves together Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz and dance energy in Permutation Seven. Even the one “dead white man” on the program, Paul Hindemith, was a rebel who defied authority and had to flee Nazi Germany; the orchestra performs his Kammermusik No. 1. [email protected]
