Just Announced! Sonoran Desert Chorale’s Spring Concerts – The Many Faces of Love

Sonoran Desert Chorales Spring Concerts

The Sonoran Desert Chorale invites you to experience The Many Faces of Love. The show certainly explores the romantic faces, but so many more.

The Many Faces of Love performances will take place Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 7:30 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, 15 E. First Avenue, Mesa, and Sunday, March 6, 2022, at 3:00 P.M. at La Casa De Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale.

Advance single tickets are $18 for adults/$15 for seniors, students, and groups of 10 or more; tickets at the door are $20 for adults and $18 for seniors/students. Visit SonoranDesertChorale.org or call 480-305-4538 to purchase tickets.

The concert’s songs range in style and genre from 16th Century composers to contemporary greats.

Whitacre wrote the piece, Sing Gently, in response to the COVID-19 crisis. He said, “I wrote the music and words … with the hope that it might give some small measure of comfort for those who need it and that it might suggest a way of living with one another that is compassionate, gentle, and kind.”

Tell My Ma is a lively Irish folksong recounting the courting of “the belle of Belfast city.” The song then reveals who she loves! Jon Washburn arranged this traditional and “cheeky” Irish children’s street.

Stirring anthems of Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, will touch hearts and minds. Eugene Butler’s Three Contemporary Madrigals showcase Italian Renaissance poets. With a modern style, the songs are interwoven with meter changes that keep both singer and audience engaged.

Join the Chorale for an expansive journey through The Many Faces of Love. They explore youthful love, love of country, romantic love, and more!

The Chorale is so happy to be bringing live choral music back to the community again. Out of consideration for all, performance venues require masks inside. Check our website for a complete statement of the Chorale’s COVID-19 safety protocol – SonoranDesertChorale.org.

About the Chorale

Jeff Harris, who directed the group for twenty-five years, founded Sonoran Desert Chorale in 1994. Artistic Director Dr. Carric Smolnik now leads it. Since its inception, the group has become a highly regarded and sophisticated choral organization, presenting musical compositions from global cultures and important pieces from European and American music traditions. Concerts frequently include guest performances and collaborations with distinguished artists and organizations in the community. The Chorale has engaged in six international concert tours, with European performances, including Venice, Rome, Florence, Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, Budapest, Ljubljana, Bayeux, Chartres, Galway, Dublin, and Edinburgh. In 2013, the Chorale was invited to perform with Broadway superstar Michael Crawford for the inaugural concert of the $150 million Mesa Arts Center. Additionally, the Chorale was selected to appear at the Western Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Salt Lake City, UT.
