SUMMARY:Bizet and Barber
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Tessa Lark and conductor Shiyeon Sung make welcome returns for a program of Lili Boulanger\, Barber’s Violin Concerto\, and music from Bizet’s classic opera Carmen. A traditionalist in the era of atonality\, Barber’s concerto contrasts lyricism with folk-like melodies and an incredibly breakneck finale. An American classic\, it remains one of the most performed 20th century violin concertos. Lili Boulanger\, the first woman to win the Prix de Rome\, at the age of 19 in 1913\, composed the two pieces as companions. They represent a study in contrasts: D’un matin de printemps is playful\, while D’un soir triste is moody and dark (some have speculated that Boulanger knew at this time that her young death was imminent). Bizet’s beloved opera Carmen is here depicted in two orchestral suites\, including the iconic Toréadors.

SUMMARY:Stories from the Warrior Society
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for Stories from the Warrior Society\, a live storytelling event that explores the evolution of warrior societies in Tribal communities through the voices of Indigenous veterans and active duty military across three generations. \nEach site will feature stories from six Native people who are veterans or active duty— two of whom will be drawn from each site’s local Tribal communities as well as the directors who are Navajo storytellers themselves. \nThis is a community event rooted in the practice of oral tradition. Stories will be shared in the spirit of Indigenous storytelling—creating space to gather\, witness\, and honor those who protect\, serve\, and care for our people. The evening includes storytelling alongside contemporary and archival images and music. \nEach gathering opens with a traditional blessing from local Indigenous culture bearers. A facilitated community conversation\, led by Indigenous journalists or cultural workers\, will follow to invite shared reflection and dialogue.

SUMMARY:The Telephone and The Impressario
DESCRIPTION:A Bill of One-Act Comedic Operas with Full Orchestra!\nGian Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone rings true in the age of constant connection. When Ben drops by to propose to Lucy\, he finds himself in a battle—not with a rival suitor\, but with her ever-ringing telephone. Menotti’s fast-paced score and clever libretto turn this everyday interruption into a hilarious commentary on love and modern technology. A perfect bite-sized opera brimming with humor and heart.\nW. A. Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) playfully lifts the curtain on the backstage dramas of the theater world. A hilarious tale of rival divas\, artistic egos\, and the chaos of casting\, this spicy satire blends brilliant music with razor-sharp wit. Whether you’re a seasoned opera lover or new to the genre\, Der Schauspieldirektor promises laughter\, charm\, and a delightful glimpse behind the scenes. Sung in German with English supertitles.
