SUMMARY:BoDeans
DESCRIPTION:With countless tunes you know from the first note\, rip-roaring gigs you can count on\, and a whole lot of energy you’ll take home with you\, BoDeans continue to contribute to the American songbook as a tried-and-true institution. Founded and led by original frontman\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer Kurt Neumann\, the band’s catalog consists of generational anthems such as “Good Things\,” You Don’t Get Much\,” “Idaho\,” and “Closer To Free\,” just to name a few. However\, they still reflect the soul and spirit of the modern American experience on their fourteenth full-length offering\, 4 The Last Time. \n“The music of BoDeans has defined much of my life\,” muses Kurt. “I consider myself fortunate to be able to do what I enjoy. I wanted to creatively do something positive for the world instead of just taking from it. So\, this is what I’ve chosen to do with my life. The music was always about the blue-collar dream of a better life\, and it still is.”

SUMMARY:ASCO: Without Permission
DESCRIPTION:ASCO: WITHOUT PERMISSION \n(Travis Gutiérrez Senger\, USA/Mexico\, 90 min. In English) \nExecutive produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna\, Travis Gutiérrez Senger’s engrossing\, genre-defying debut feature explores the revolutionary Chicano art group ASCO\, who transformed 1970s LA into a bold\, defiant canvas. Merging activism with radical artmaking\, the artistic collective confronted the norms of Hollywood\, museums\, and media\, and have since been recognized among the 20th century’s most significant artists. ASCO: Without Permission\, winner of the Cinema Tropical Award for Best U.S. Latinx Film\, captures their boundary-breaking spirit with an inventive approach\, weaving nonfiction and fiction together with a new generation of artists. The result is more than a profile—it’s a reimagining of what’s possible in art and cinema\, celebrating iconoclasts who were decades ahead of their time. \n

SUMMARY:Bizet and Barber
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Tessa Lark and conductor Shiyeon Sung make welcome returns for a program of Lili Boulanger\, Barber’s Violin Concerto\, and music from Bizet’s classic opera Carmen. A traditionalist in the era of atonality\, Barber’s concerto contrasts lyricism with folk-like melodies and an incredibly breakneck finale. An American classic\, it remains one of the most performed 20th century violin concertos. Lili Boulanger\, the first woman to win the Prix de Rome\, at the age of 19 in 1913\, composed the two pieces as companions. They represent a study in contrasts: D’un matin de printemps is playful\, while D’un soir triste is moody and dark (some have speculated that Boulanger knew at this time that her young death was imminent). Bizet’s beloved opera Carmen is here depicted in two orchestral suites\, including the iconic Toréadors.
