SUMMARY:Young Artists' Competition
DESCRIPTION:COT’s first Young Artists’ Competition (YAC) in 1984 was the only event of its kind in this area for high-school-age musicians. Other competitions in town were open to college-age students as well\, so the younger children rarely had a chance to win the opportunity to perform. Now in its 40th year\, the competition has expanded to five categories: strings\, piano\, winds\, percussion\, and harp. Each category is judged separately with both a junior and a senior division. The competition offers students a good introduction to the audition process. Winners gain public exposure and are awarded cash prizes. The event provides each entrant a unique learning experience\, and music teachers from both studios and schools applaud the orchestra for this contribution to the young musicians’ development. To date\, COT has hosted nearly 100 performances by students ranging from elementary to high-school age. We will again offer an Ensemble category\, the first of its kind in Tucson. Groups of 2 to 10 young musicians may apply together as an ensemble and perform a chamber work. Groups may consist of students in Grades 3–12. The selected piece should not require orchestral accompaniment.

SUMMARY:The Diary of Anne Frank
DESCRIPTION:The Diary of Anne Frank is a powerful true story\, adapted for the stage\, recounting the experiences of Anne Frank\, a Jewish teenager\, and seven others in hiding during the Holocaust. Set in the Secret Annex of an Amsterdam office building\, this play reveals the courage\, resilience\, and day-to-day realities of its occupants\, seen through the eyes of young Anne. Experience Anne’s transition from girlhood to maturity\, her blossoming friendship with Peter\, and the heartrending conclusion when their refuge is discovered. Exploring themes of identity\, resilience\, and hope under harrowing circumstances\, this profoundly moving play illustrates the endurance of the human spirit and serves as a poignant reminder we must stand up to the horrors of genocide.

SUMMARY:Debussy's La mer
DESCRIPTION:Debussy’s impressionistic symphonic tone poems\, La mer and Ibéria\, take center stage in this all-French–Iberian-peninsula program. Mezzo-soprano Angela Brower is the soloist for Berlioz’s cantata Cléopâtre\, on the first of her two weeks with the TSO\, and Maestro Gomez introduces the music of Olivier Messiaen with the grief-stricken Le tombeau resplendissant. For his depiction of La mer (“The Sea”)\, Debussy drew inspiration from visual art\, notably Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The composer’s kaleidoscope sense of musical color mirrors the vibrant colors of the Japanese woodblock print. While also impressionistic\, Ibéria is a more concrete musical depiction of Spanish rhythms and flair\, evoking notable praise from Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. Berlioz’s Cléopâtre\, studded with lush orchestral sections and dramatic vocal writing\, is a showpiece for the vocalist as she depicts the heroine’s final moments.

SUMMARY:MANIA: The Abba Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Wilde’s most beloved comedy gets a delightful twist in this clever\, fast-paced production of The Importance of Being Earnest. When two charming young men each adopt the name “Ernest” to escape their social obligations\, they find themselves tangled in a web of mistaken identities\, romantic mishaps\, and outrageous revelations. Add in two strong-willed young women\, a cucumber sandwich or two\, and the formidable Lady Bracknell\, and you’ve got a recipe for scandalous fun. This version keeps Wilde’s razor-sharp wit intact while reimagining the world of Victorian manners with a bold\, modern flair. Expect elegance\, absurdity\, and a few surprises along the way.
