SUMMARY:Haydn's Farewell
DESCRIPTION:A new premiere by Arizona-raised Paolo Prestini is bookended by works by Gabriela Lena Frank\, Villa-Lobos\, and Haydn’s Overture to L’isola disabitata and Symphony No. 45\, ÒFarewell.’ Although Haydn’s Symphony No. 45\, the ÒFarewell\, is known for its dramatic Adagio final movement where the musicians exit the stage\, it stands on its own as a beautiful\, affecting work. Haydn was also an accomplished opera composer; his opera LÕisola disabitata tells the story of sisters stranded on a desert island for 13 years\, developed in partnership with the most famous librettist of his time\, Pietro Metastasio. The program features two important American composers of their generation: Gabriela Lena Frank draws on her Peruvian heritage and the work of Britten to craft her Concertino Cusque–o; and Prestini\, now a major force in New York City musical life\, pens a newly co-commissioned work for the TSO. Villa-Lobos’ ninth and final suite in the series of Brazilian folk and popular music infused with the style of J.S. Bach\, showcases the TSO strings.

SUMMARY:Music of the Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:What powerful dream would compel you to travel by wagon and foot across the entire country? Across the Great Plains and deserts\, through the Rocky Mountain passes facing starvation\, predators\, disease and the elements? Whether on long\, perilous journeys or wherever one calls home\, music has communicated joy and provided a means for survival. Folk music ties to one’s past and the dream of a future; Spirituals inspired hope for freedom and were integral to community. Copland’s Old American Songs includes Shall We Gather at the River—a song expressing dreams of a better life—and the beloved Simple Gifts. Copland’s use of the Shaker melody elevated it to the role of an indelible American anthem. This program includes folk songs by Stephen Foster\, considered the father of American music\, and Spiritual arrangements by William Grant Still\, known as Dean of African American Composers. Standing shoulder to shoulder with these giants is William Billings and the Sacred Harp tradition\, perhaps the oldest form of truly American music. Sung a cappella\, this music raises the roof!
