SUMMARY:THE WIZ
DESCRIPTION:The Tony Award-winning musical THE WIZ is coming to Tempe.\nProducers Kristin Caskey\, Mike Isaacson\, Brian Anthony Moreland\, and Ambassador Theatre Group present an all-new production of the groundbreaking\, Tony Award-winning musical THE WIZ\, adapted from The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. The highly anticipated Broadway revival of THE WIZ returns “home” to stages across America in an all-new Pre-Broadway tour\, the first one in 40 years. The tour begins in THE WIZ’s original home city of Baltimore\, where the show made its world premiere 50 years ago. \nThis groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway\nFrom its iconic score packed with soul\, gospel\, rock\, and finger-snapping 70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world. Audiences enjoy the epic grooves of such beloved\, timeless hits as “Ease on Down the Road\,” which became the show’s break-out single\, and the bona fide classic “Home” in this spectacular revival. \nFeaturing a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls (and others)\, director Schele Williams (The Notebook\, revival of Disney’s Aida)\, choreographer JaQuel Knight (Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”)\, Amber Ruffin (additional material)\, and Joseph Joubert(music supervision\, orchestrations\, & music arrangements) conjure up an Oz unlike anything ever seen before. \nTHE WIZ design team will include scenic design by Academy Award-winning Hannah Beachler (Black Panther\, Beyonce’s Black is King and Lemonade)\, costume design by Emmy Award-winning and two-time Academy Award-nominated Sharen Davis (Ray\, Dreamgirls)\, lighting design by Barrymore Award-winning Ryan J. O’Gara (Thoughts of a Colored Man) and wig design by Academy Award-winning Mia Neal (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom). \nA dynamite infusion of ballet\, jazz\, and modern pop brings a new groove to ease down the road. So\, everybody rejoice! An all-new 21st-Century WIZ is sliding into an Emerald city near you.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is returning to Tempe by popular demand. It’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!

SUMMARY:The Moldau & More
DESCRIPTION:Each work echoes with sweet nostalgia. Smetana’s graceful\, flowing “The Moldau” is a memory of his Czech homeland. The Third Symphony of Jean Sibelius recalls a Mozartian intimacy then adds a bristling urgency. Richard Strauss wrote his first horn concerto at the age of 19 for his father. He would wait 60 years before composing another\, this one mature and melancholy\, and expertly performed by the TSO’s former principal Nelson Ricardo Yovera Perez.

SUMMARY:Bruch & Mendelssohn with Rolf Haas
DESCRIPTION:As he gazed on rugged terrain off the island of Staffa off the coast of Scotland\, Felix Mendelssohn was moved to jot down a melody that would become The Hebrides Overture. Also known as “Fingal’s Cave\,” the evocative overture is a work that audiences love to hear. That trip in 1829 to the Scottish Highlands also inspired the beginning of Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony No. 3\, though it took the German composer 13 years to complete the moody\, romantic symphony. Conversely\, Max Bruch would not visit Scotland until the year after the premiere of his Scottish Fantasy in 1881. Nevertheless\, the German composer based the popular work on four Scottish folk tunes. Violinist Rolf Haas\, concertmaster of the Phoenix Symphony\, is soloist in the program led by Anthony Parnther\, music director of the San Bernadino Symphony Orchestra and a frequent conductor of film and TV scores.

SUMMARY:Emily Marvosh
DESCRIPTION:Composers\, performers\, and poets alike have all had their day in court. Johannes Brahms was a witness against his good friend in a divorce hearing. Clara Wieck and Robert Schumann sued her father for the chance to be married against his wishes. Franz Schubert and Ethel Smyth were arrested for revolutionary opinions and political activism. The centerpiece of the program is Brahms’s Op. 91: two songs written before and after an acrimonious court battle in which Brahms was a witness. Hear these stories and more—and the music they inspired—in this program for voice\, viola and piano.

SUMMARY:Warlock\, Charles & Elfman
DESCRIPTION:Four-time Oscar-nominated film composer Danny Elfman needs little introduction. If you’ve seen such films as “Men in Black\,” “Edward Scissorhands” or “Good Will Hunting\,” you’re familiar with his music.
