SUMMARY:Bizet and Barber
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Tessa Lark and conductor Shiyeon Sung make welcome returns for a program of Lili Boulanger\, Barber’s Violin Concerto\, and music from Bizet’s classic opera Carmen. A traditionalist in the era of atonality\, Barber’s concerto contrasts lyricism with folk-like melodies and an incredibly breakneck finale. An American classic\, it remains one of the most performed 20th century violin concertos. Lili Boulanger\, the first woman to win the Prix de Rome\, at the age of 19 in 1913\, composed the two pieces as companions. They represent a study in contrasts: D’un matin de printemps is playful\, while D’un soir triste is moody and dark (some have speculated that Boulanger knew at this time that her young death was imminent). Bizet’s beloved opera Carmen is here depicted in two orchestral suites\, including the iconic Toréadors.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Sedona Presents The Brentano Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music Sedona is pleased to present the Brentano Quartet in concert on Sunday\, March 22\, 2026 at 3 p.m. at the Sedona Hilton (90 Ridge Trail Drive\, Sedona\, Arizona 86351). Considered one of the world’s most revered string ensembles\, the Brentano Quartet will offer an inspiring program that bridges classical masterworks with inventive contemporary music. \nDescribed by The New Yorker as “fiercely intelligent and expressively pristine\,” the Brentano Quartet – which consists of violinists Mark Steinberg and Serena Canin\, violist Misha Amory and cellist Nina Lee – has been a defining force in chamber music for more than three decades. Known for its probing interpretations\, thoughtfully curated programs and a sound of remarkable depth and refinement\, the ensemble has performed across five continents at the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals\, earning both critical acclaim and devoted audiences. \nThe March 22 program at Chamber Music Sedona reflects the Quartet’s signature blend of tradition and innovation. Schubert’s emotionally charged “A minor Quartet” and Beethoven’s radiant “Op. 59\, No. 3” — one of the composer’s groundbreaking “Razumovsky” quartets — frame “Machine\, Learning” by composer Timo Andres\, a work that brings a contemporary perspective to the enduring string quartet form. \nThroughout their distinguished career\, the Brentano Quartet has collaborated with some of today’s most celebrated artists\, including Jessye Norman\, Joyce DiDonato\, Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss. Their extensive discography includes Beethoven’s “Op. 131\,” famously featured in the film “A Late Quartet\,” as well as acclaimed recordings of Mozart\, Haydn and contemporary repertoire. The ensemble is named after Antonie Brentano\, widely believed to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved\,” underscoring their enduring connection to the heart of the quartet tradition. \nFor more information and to purchase tickets for the Brentano Quartet concert\, please visit https://chambermusicsedona.org/2026-brentano-quartet/.

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra | The Wayfarer’s Hope
DESCRIPTION:Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra’s six-part journey through the United States of America’s 250 years of spirit\, struggle\, and triumph continues with the fifth installment\, The Wayfarer’s Hope: A Nation’s Journey\, a poignant orchestral program tracing the emotional and physical journeys that shape both the United States of America and its people. Opening with a newly commissioned overture by William C. White\, the concert introduces a fresh voice in American music—an exploration of where the nation stands today and where it might go next. Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer)\, performed by soloist Sedona Libero\, follows with an intimate portrayal of a traveler’s heartbreak\, hope\, and search for meaning\, echoing the individual struggles that define the American experience. After intermission\, Sibelius’s Symphony no. 2 offers a sweeping\, triumphant conclusion. Long associated with national identity and perseverance\, the symphony’s final movement resonates with themes of independence and optimism. Together\, these works form a musical narrative of resilience\, transformation\, and renewal—honoring the spirit of a nation that continues to evolve\, 250 years into its journey.
