SUMMARY:BeethovenÕs Emperor
DESCRIPTION:Alessio Bax makes his TSO debut as the soloist in BeethovenÕs monumental Piano Concerto No. 5\, ÒEmperorÓ. ShostakovichÕs Fifth Symphony and Carlos SimonÕs Fate Now Conquers complete this program built on themes of unrest and power. Both the concerto and symphony were composed during periods of great unrest: the Beethoven when the Napoleonic wars arrived in Vienna\, and the Shostakovich as StalinÕs power grew and the composer was in increasing danger. Considered the greatest of ShostakovichÕs symphonies\, the Fifth is more classical in style than his earlier works\, a direct response to criticism from Stalin. While it features a finale that at first appears triumphant\, it is perhaps a satirical picture of the dictator. Influenced by both a journal entry by Beethoven and the harmonic structure of his Seventh Symphony\, Carlos SimonÕs Fate Now Conquers completes the program.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Arizona Repertory Singers celebrate the timeless themes of the season—”Peace and Joy.” The engaging program of 16 choral works ranges from contemplative to exuberant and includes traditional carols\, well-known standards\, and contemporary compositions. \nFrom Renaissance to contemporary works\, you’ll hear the harmonious “In Dulci Jubilo” by Michaël Praetorius\, the new and glorious “Angels We Have Heard On High” by Dan Forrest with string quartet\, Christopher Tin’s “Baba Yetu” from the 2005 hit video game Civilization IV\, “Deck the Hall” by internationally known composer and conductor John Rutter\, and Christine Guter’s dizzying “Dreidel Song” in 7/8. We hope you will join us as part of your holiday tradition for a performance of contemplative and joyful choral music to ring in the season! \nTickets are $22 online\, $25 at the door.
