DESCRIPTION:Seminars this season will be taught by several scholars and practitioners we know you won’t want to miss. First up for1984 is Flachmann favorite Dr. Susan Willis\, who since 1985 has worked with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival as its resident dramaturg\, a director on its MFA faculty\, a public speaker\, and author of study materials and program notes. Her observations at the BBC during production of its 1978-85 Shakespeare’s complete works series led to The BBC Shakespeare Plays: Making the Televised Canon (1991). Dr. Willis is also Professor Emerita of English at Auburn University at Montgomery\, where she specialized in Shakespeare in production. She holds degrees from Emory University and the University of Virginia. She has led Southwest Shakespeare’s Flachmann seminars since 2013.

SUMMARY:1984
DESCRIPTION:1984\, is based on the George Orwell dystopian classic of the same name\, published in 1949 and set in a futuristic totalitarian society led by the mysterious Big Brother. The play is adapted by Nick Hern and explores the manipulation of truth and fear in the pursuit of absolute power\, and the way these conditions shape and change human relationships. The protagonist\, Winston Smith\, works for the inaptly named Ministry of Truth. The play follows Winston’s secret love affair and dreams of rebellion that ultimately lead to capture\, interrogation\, torture and brainwashing. In the end\, he betrays his love and gives in to the Thought Police\, embracing the Party’s version of reality.

SUMMARY:The Princess Bride: An Inconceivable Evening with Cary Elwes
DESCRIPTION:Pirates might be reduced to a Halloween costume for some people\, but they are a year-round fascination for archaeologist and National Geographic Explorer Lisa Briggs. We go on assignment with her to the Mediterranean Sea to explore how pirating shaped the Roman Empire. We also meet the Pirate Queen of China and then head into the lab with Lisa to follow the most famous renegade\, Blackbeard. Lisa Briggs is an underwater archaeologist\, scuba instructor\, and technical diver. Her current research examines ancient shipwrecks of the Mediterranean Sea and how scientific methods can illuminate the stories of the cargoes these ships carried and the daring sailors who plied the seas of the past. She also has a particular interest in demonstrating how the intersection of science and adventure can inspire young students to pursue STEM subjects.
