Everybody say Yeah! Cyndi Lauper’s Tony-Award winning hit musical, “Kinky Boots” hits the stage at Arts Express Theatre April 25-May 17. This pop-rock infused, scintillating, big-hearted and triumphant musical plays Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday Matinees at 2 p.m.
Based on a true story and inspired by the film of the same name, “Kinky Boots: The Musical” follows Charlie Price (Matt Milne), who recently inherited his father’s failing shoe factory in England. He never wanted to make shoes, but is determined to save his father’s legacy, despite his fiancée Nicola’s (Danae Dorame) wishes to sell. With no idea how to revive the factory and save the workers’ livelihoods, Charlie has a chance encounter with spunky drag queen Lola (Dylan Jackson) that changes his path.
With encouragement from factory employee Lauren (Rachael Fornof), Charlie suddenly realizes there’s a niche market for high-heeled shoes for men, and with Lola’s design savvy and knowledge, production begins. But not everyone is enthusiastic about following the advice of Lola, and prejudice leads to a clash with foreman Don (Andrew Gray). Meanwhile Lauren realizes she’s falling for Charlie “The History of Wrong Guys,” and as the date for the Milan fashion show approaches, tempers rise and things start to fall apart. Charlie’s life is hanging by a thread, but with help from Lola and his Angels, Lauren, and factory manager George (David Gunther), Charlie rallies and Lola and her Angels save the day!
With treasured songs like “Raise You Up/Just Be,” “Land of Lola,” and “Soul of a Man,” “Kinky Boots: The Musical” received 6 Tony Awards, including the first female solo score Tony ever awarded to Cyndi Lauper, and was hailed as “inspired” by The New York Times.
